Learn to Throw: Wedging, Centering & Everything In Between *

Ready to get your hands dirty? This offering walks you through the basics every potter needs before they can call themselves one — starting with wedging (pushing air bubbles out of your clay before they wreck your piece in the kiln) and centering. Perfect for beginners ready to turn a lump of clay into something worth keeping.

Private lessons available Wednesdays starting at 11am.

Booking and payment is through Fishschool. Once you select your lesson on their website, Nadia from Fishschool will email you to schedule your session — just let her know you'd like a private class with Ashanty!

Clay Has Trust Issues: Wedging & Centering 101

Before clay becomes anything beautiful, it needs some tough love. In this video, I share the two basics that make or break a cylinder: wedging (pushing out air bubbles before they wreck your piece in the kiln) and centering (a wheel standoff where only one of us wins — and it's me). Messy, meditative, and there's a solid chance I end up with mud on my face.

“This was my first time throwing clay on a wheel and the teacher [Ashanty] was so patient, and so good at explaining things: she has such a reassuring, lovely energy for teaching something that can be so humbling! My friend and I had a wonderful time and can't wait to come back to the 2nd class”
